I am a landscape photographer traveling to our wonderful national parks and other public lands. I try to depict our national resources as attractively as possible. I like getting a painterly look with a lot of depth and I am influenced by the romantic Hudson River School of painting of the mid-19th century and the Photo Secession movement of the early 20th century.
Photography is my escape from a busy, hectic and technology driven life. Landscape photography, in particular, allows me to go to a place alone and focus on creating something interesting for myself. On the other hand, I share my work in the hopes that others also find enjoyment from it. There is a great deal of satisfaction when my vision clicks with other people.
Photography suits me because it combines the very technical with the artistic. My background is in computer technology and there are many technical aspects such as aperture, shutter speed, framing and composition.
Unlike computer technology, photography has a visual artistic element. As in painting, the final result transcends the technical aspects. The paint, canvas and brushstrokes alone are technical, but the final result goes beyond the technique.
Part of the artistic element is going beyond documenting a scene. I am influenced by the romantic Hudson River School of painting of the mid-19th century and the Photo Secession movement of the early 20th century.
I get my best shots with a lot of planning and visiting the same location many times. A great photograph rarely comes from showing up to a spot and taking a shot. The light, weather, season and many other things go into a great shot. This means a lot of planning and visiting the same location over and over again hoping that everything comes together all at one time.
I am a member of Viewpoint Photographic Art Gallery in Sacramento. Here are my recent showings. The ones in bold have received an award.
